Alaska Natives increasingly prefer to be known by the names they use in their own languages, such as Inupiaq or Yupik. Inuit is now the current term in Alaska and across the Arctic, and Eskimo is fading from use. The Inuit Circumpolar Council prefers the term Inuit but some other organizations use Eskimo.
There are three types of Alaskan Natives with different cultural and linquistic history. They are Indian, Eskimo and Aleut. These are further defined by eleven distinct cultures.
Generally, the term Eskimo is not offensive to the native peoples of Alaska. However, there may be the occasional person who is offended. Some Inuit people take offense with this term, some do not. Generally, in Canada the term Eskimo should be considered offensive and the term Inuit is preferred.
